Internal Medicine Laboratories

Our main mission is to pioneer innovation in research, education and care by bringing science to the patient. To achieve this objective, we aim to continually develop new (digital) technologies and innovations within the department in research, education and care.

About our Department

Our research

The department of Internal Medicine has nine sectors with a large variety of research topics. The nine sectors include Endocrinology, Nephrology, Pharmacology-Vascular and Metabolic Diseases, Infectious Diseases, Clinical Immunology, Allergology, Geriatrics, Acute Medicine and one young sector – Nursing Sciences. In addition, we have the Dietetics Research Line. All sectors have an appointed sector head who has delegated responsibility for clinical care and research.

The department also allocates nine research laboratories: five endocrine laboratories (for the Endocrinology sector), a pharmacology lab and a lab for vascular and metabolic diseases (the Pharmacology and Vascular and Metabolic Diseases sector), a renal insufficiency and organ transplantation lab, including renal tubular disorders (the Nephrology and Transplantation sector), and two full diagnostic laboratories (an endocrinology diagnostic laboratory and a porphyria lab). All laboratories have a head of research.

Laboratories Sector Endocrinology

Main focus areas of the laboratories:

Laboratories Sector Nephrology and Transplantation

Main focus areas of the laboratories:

  • Renal tubular disorders; Head of research E.J. Hoorn and R. Zietse
  • Renal insufficiency and organ transplantation; Head of research C.C. Baan

Laboratories Sector Pharmacology, Vascular and Metabolic Diseases

Main focus areas of the laboratories:

  • Cardiovascular pharmacology; Head of research A.H.J. Danser
  • Cardiovascular genetics and metabolic diseases; Head of research M.T. Mulder

Diagnostic laboratories of Internal medicine

The department of Internal Medicine hosts three diagnostic laboratories.

Research Groups

Genetic Laboratory of Internal Medicine / Population Genomics

Our mission is to understand the genetics and genomics of complex traits and common diseases and apply the discoveries to clinical practice.

Laboratory for Calcium and Bone Metabolism

The overall aim of the research group is to understand the mechanisms behind skeletal disorders and discover novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of disturbances in bone and mineral homeostasis.

Laboratory of Experimental Transplantation and Intestinal Surgery (LETIS)

The Laboratory of Experimental Transplantation and Intestinal Surgery (LETIS) is part of the Department of Surgery and works in close collaboration with the Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology. We have a strong focus on translational research in the field of regenerative medicine, organ transplantation, liver disease and liver cancer. The research aims to provide basic and applied knowledge using organoids, bio-scaffolds, animal models, and organ perfusion technologies.

Metabolism and Reproduction

The Metabolism and Reproduction lab studies sex differences in metabolic dysfunction with the ultimate goal to identify new leads in the treatment of obesity and its comorbidities.

Renal tubular disorders

We study the mechanisms of renal tubular transport and the link with human disease including renal tubular disorders, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease.

Rotterdam Transplantation Laboratorium

The research performed at The Rotterdam Transplantation laboratory is translational of nature and can be dissected into two research lines being Immune Monitoring and Tissue Repair & Cell Therapy.

Thyroid laboratory

The Thyroid laboratory (part of the Erasmus MC Academic for Thyroid Diseases) investigates the role of thyroid hormone in health and disease.

Projects

Facilities

Our research laboratories are all equipped with sufficient basic laboratory equipment. We have ML-I and ML-II cell culture facilities, bio-analyzers, FACS machines, LC-MS/MS facilities and state-of-the- art equipment for genetic analysis, including high-tech advanced machines for high throughput genetic analysis.

Collaborations

The Department of Internal Medicine actively seeks collaboration with multiple national and international research groups.

News, events and awards

Education
