Immunoregulation and mucosal immunology

This research line is a close collaboration between our department and the Flemish Institute for Biotechnology (VIB) in Ghent, Belgium.

About our research group/lab

Our research

Why was this group formed?
The thematic area of the Lambrecht group is centered around unraveling the role of antigen presenting cells and epithelial cells in asthma.

What is the overall aim?
The research in our unit is centered around the role of antigen-presenting cells (dendritic cells (DCs) and macrophages) in the inflammatory lung diseases asthma. We study how DCs and macrophages develop in the lung and how they bridge innate and adaptive immunity. Our ultimate goal is to find novel ways to prevent and treat asthma. The most important focus of our lab is to understand how DCs induce allergies. Another major goal of our lab is to understand the contribution of epithelial cells to the generation of asthma.

What type of research do you focus on in this group?
The group unraveled the complexity and function of lung dendritic cell (DC) subsets, and unraveled how epithelial cells program type 2 immunity by affecting innate immune cells and DCs. The lab has also unraveled how exposure to a protective environment in early life can reprogram epithelial and DC responses. In the period of 2013-2018 and ERC Consolidator and ERC Advanced grant were acquired, which provide the opportunity to focus on the impact of protein misfolding and spontaneous protein crystallization in asthma.
