Patient education in the Emergency Department

Multidisciplinary research group focusing on patient education in the Emergency Department.

What we do

About

What is the motivation for this research?

Optimizing patient education in the Emergency Department (ED).

Different information methods are used to provide information to patients in the ED. Most often patient information is given orally, in written form, and sometimes with audio-visual methods (e.g. video). Oral information given by the physician is often very brief, given swiftly and can therefore be difficult for patients to remember or reproduce.

What is the aim?

Our aim is to measure the effect of online audio-visual (video) and written patient information in the Emergency Department. We focus especially on incidence of post-concussion symptoms in patients with mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) and on parents’ knowledge of pain treatment for their children.

How will you perform this research?

We preformed two multicenter studies:

  • Parental Instructions for Analgesic Use in the emergency department (PAIN-study).
  • Mild traumatic brain injury and Outcomes from VIsual patient Education (MOVIE): A randomized controlled trial.

What is the desirable outcome?

Optimizing patient education in the Emergency Department.
