About D. (Daniel) Bos, MD, PhD

Introduction

Current position
I hold a position as Associate Professor in the department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine and the department of Epidemiology.

Current research interests and goals
My research focuses on the interface of arteriosclerosis and neurodegenerative diseases, with a strong emphasis on imaging. Specifically, I aim to obtain relevant biomarkers for improved understanding and prediction of these diseases, and to identify potential targets for intervention strategies. As such, I have developed two main research lines. One of these is focused on the causes and consequences of intracranial arteriosclerosis. In this field, I performed important pioneering-work on the identification and quantification of intracranial carotid artery calcification as one the most important risk factors for clinical stroke. This work has had considerable impact and has also led to an extension of my research horizon towards clinical studies on the value of carotid artery calcification in stroke patients.
My other line of research revolves around optimization of imaging of arteriosclerosis and its related phenotypes. Important aspects within this research line are the early detection of subclinical disease, and development of strategies to maximally leverage existing medical imaging examinations.

Teaching activities

My teaching activities have rapidly increased during the past years and range from lectures at the Junior Med School to intensive tutoring of MSc-students in Medicine or Health Sciences (over 20 students completed their research under my supervision during the past 5 years) and supervision of PhD-candidates (currently supervising 3 PhD-candidates).
Specific highlights of my teaching activities include the following. First, since 2016, I am  giving one of the opening lectures of the prestigious Junior Med School-programme for talented high school students that are interested in studying Medicine and performing scientific research. Second, since 2016, I am part of the teaching staff of the summer course entitled “Study design in Clinical Epidemiology (EPI210)” in the Master of Public Health-programme at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. Third, since 2018, I have become part of the core staff of the course “Clinical translation of Epidemiology (CE01)” which is part of the Master of Science-programme provided by the Netherlands Institute of Health Sciences. Finally, since 2019, I am a tutor for first-year Medicine students in the core curriculum of Medicine at the Erasmus University Rotterdam.
