About Prof. P.D. (Peter) Siersema, MD PhD

Introduction

Peter D. Siersema graduated from Medical School at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He obtained his PhD at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam with a thesis on the effect of a rare metabolic disorder, named porphyria cutanea tarda, on the liver. At the same time, he followed his training in Internal Medicine followed by a training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam.

In 1995 he became a Staff gastroenterologist at the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Erasmus MC. In 2001-2002, he did a research fellowship in esophageal diseases at the Stanford University in Palo Alto (California, USA).

After coming back to Rotterdam in 2002, he was in 2007 appointed as Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Head of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University Medical Center Utrecht. After a successful 10 years in Utrecht, he was in 2016 appointed as Professor of Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Oncology and Head of the Endoscopy Center of the Radboud university medical center in Nijmegen. Here, he was responsible for re-organizing the endoscopic unit and extending the number of therapeutic endoscopic procedures.

In 2023, dr. Siersema came back to the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, The Netherlands as Professor of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy with focus on Innovation and Sustainability.

Field(s) of expertise

Dr. Siersema has led many national and international multicenter clinical and translational studies on the pathogenesis of Barrett’s esophagus and the development of esophageal adenocarcinoma, screening for Barrett’s esophagus and early-stage esophageal adenocarcinoma, optimizing the endoscopic detection and treatment of adenomatous polyps, and the development and evaluation of novel endoscopic techniques and technologies.

Dr. Siersema has acquired during the last 20 years more than €25 millions of grant funding for research projects from different organizations, among them, the European Union, Dutch Research Council, ZonMW, KWF Dutch Cancer Society, and the Dutch Digestive Foundation, but also from pharmaceutical companies and endoscopic devices and endoscope companies. He has published more than 775 peer-reviewed publications, has an H-index of 81 and more than dan 27,000 citations on the Web of Science and an H-index van 113 and more than 47,000 citations on Google Scholar. Dr. Siersema has received various prestigious international prices and awards and coached more than 65 PhD-students during their thesis trajectory. Some of them have now leading positions in the field of gastroenterology and endoscopy.

Dr. Siersema has been president of the Dutch Society for Gastroenterology and was for more than 10 years member of the Supervising Committee of the Dutch Digestive Foundation. He is Editor-in-Chief of one the top-10 scientific journals in the category Gastroenterology and Hepatology and the nr. 1 journal in the field of Endoscopy (IF: 9.3). Dr. Siersema is a member of the Governing Board of the European Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE), member of the Royal Dutch Medical Association (RGS), chair of the committee revising the Dutch guideline Esophageal and Gastric Cancer, member of the Dutch guideline committee Gastrointestinal Surgery, past-chair of the committee that revised the training curriculum for gastroenterology fellows in the Netherlands and past-president of the European Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ESDE)
